Welcome to coachtarello.com, a website created not only to provide insight into my coaching and athletic career, but also to inform about current seasons, and to keep track of and honor those athletes who strove to reach the highest of levels. Athletes and their families will also be able to gain season information by visiting my website. My hope is that future athletes will strive to have their names mentioned among those who excelled before them. It is the summer of 2008 and I am very excited to announce that I have moved back to New Jersey. This move was made to begin a couple of new chapters in my life as I will be married in 2009 and have begun what I hope will be a long and successful career coaching at the collegiate level. Prior to returning to New Jersey I spent 11 years coaching on the high school level...3 years (2005 - 2008 ) in Massachusetts and before that I spent 8 years (1997 - 2004) moving up the coaching ladder in South Jersey. Below you will find a chronological list (broken up by seasons) of my coaching accomplishments. |
| Cherokee High School - Marlton, New Jersey I began my career at Cherokee, a few years prior to being employed there full time, as a volunteer assistant coach for the boys’ cross country team under my former coach, Steve Shaklee. Through this position, I was able to play a role in the Cherokee Boys Cross Country Group IV State Championship. It was not until the following season that I took over as the Head Girls Cross Country coach and began working toward the Head Girls Winter Track and Field position and Assistant Girls Spring Track and Field coach in charge of distance and middle distance. From that first year coaching the girls cross country I began transforming Cherokee from a dormant program into one of the most well respected in the state: Cross Country Highlights * Six consecutive trips to the N.J. Group IV State Championships * Each season ranked among the top five teams in South Jersey and among the top twenty teams in the state. * 2003 - Won its first ever S.J. Group IV Sectional Championship, defeating, for the first time in school history, arch rival Shawnee High School. Also, during that season, * Malia Lyles and Lisa Burkholder - All State recognition. * Lisa Burkholder, Malia Lyles, Melissa Razo, Michelle Bilicki and Megan O’Leary - All South Jersey honors. Track and Field Highlights * Distance Medley at Penn relays * Lisa Burkholder becoming my first individual qualifier at Penn Relays in the mile. * 2003 - Burkholder broke the Burlington County record in the mile by running 5:00 as a freshman. * Lisa Burkholder - Adidas National Track & Field Championships Freshman Mile National Champion & All American. * 1999 - 4x800 relay running 9:34 * 1999 - 4xMile that ran 21:24 and ranked 6th in the nation. * 2004 - Distance Medley team that ran 12:26 (anchored by my 1st 5:00 miler, Burkholder). |
Shawnee High School - Medford, New Jersey One of my most unforgettable coaching experiences. In 1997 and 1998, I worked with the girls’ team in charge of middle distance and distance at my alma mater. While at Shawnee, I was able to coach Jenna Darcy, who subsequently became a top ranked Division 1 athlete at LaSalle University, to the Group IV 3200 State Championship. My distance runners played a pivotal role in Shawnee’s 1998 Group IV Championship. Other notable athletes I coached at Shawnee were Lauren Anders, Marybeth Redheffer, Taylor VanAcker, Betsy White, Dana Palumbo and Kim Pickard. |
Throughout the time I have spent coaching cross country and track and field, my teams and athletes have achieved numerous accolades. My runners and teams have gained recognition, not only on the local level, but also on the State and National levels. In fact, during my tenure at each school, it was not uncommon to find my runners or relay teams ranked among the top athletes both state wide and nationally on their respective lists. Annually, my athletes compete in their respective All State Championships, Regional Championships and National High School Championships, either in Maryland, New York or North Carolina. In addition, although the majority of my success and experience comes from working with middle distance and distance runners, I have worked with and coached sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers at various times during my tenures at both Cherokee H.S. and Ursuline Academy, all of whom excelled. A native a Medford, New Jersey, I now reside in Long Branch, New Jersey. I graduated from Shawnee High School in 1992 before continuing my running career at Rider College. During my days as a Shawnee Renegade, I was able to establish myself as an outstanding middle distance runner, earning All-South Jersey honors for the 800 meters in 1991 and 1992 and was a National Scholastic qualifier. As a Bronc at Rider College, I captured two individual NEC crowns, beginning with the 1996 indoor 500 meter title and following that with the 1997 outdoor 800 meter crown, in addition to numerous relays. The highlight of my collegiate career was being named All East (by placing in the top 6 at IC4A’s) eight times. Three of those All East selections were earned by placing 4th three years in a row at 500 meters. I graduated from Shawnee with PR’ s of 49 seconds for 400 and 1:54 for 800 meters. As a Bronc, I ran 47 seconds for 400, 1:02 for 500 and 1: 50 for 800 meters. In addition, I was a member of the Renegades’ 7:53 4x800 and Rider’s 3:08 4x400 relays. To date, I remain the Shawnee record holder at 800 meters and the Rider record holder at 500 meters and hold the Distance Medley, 4x800 and 4x400 records at both schools. The reason for all this success is simple- “A full commitment by the athletes to the values of the program.” |
Ursuline Academy - Dedham, MA & Sacred Heart High School - Vineland, NJ In the spring of 2005, I became the Head Track and Field Coach at Ursuline Academy, an all girls Catholic school that competed in Class D (smallest) and had no track on which to train. Sacred Heart * Began cross country coaching career coaching Tim Callinan to a State Championship Ursuline Academy During my short stay at Ursuline, I was able to work with and inspire very good athletes to the best season Ursuline has seen to date. We were able to re-write the record books and qualify our 4:10 4x400 meter relay, consisting of Megan Lawrie, Katlin O’Malley, Kin Schlesinger and Jackie Horihan, to an All State berth. |
